In 2025, Transform Your Nursing Career with These Self-Care Tips

I'm sure at times you may think a lot of these self-care blogs are all repetitive. And I'm inclined to agree with you. Why is that? That's quite simple to answer. Nurses are stubborn! I’m sure you were thinking the same thing. As nurses we will take care of everyone else before we take care of ourselves. In 2025, I’m trying to help you NOT become a jaded nurse like myself. If it’s too late and you’re already on the dark side, welcome! For those of you who haven’t crossed over yet, let’s face it, nursing is challenging. And some of us are just surviving shift-to-shift. Whether it’s navigating long shifts, keeping up with new technologies, or balancing patient care with personal life, self-care is the secret to staying sane in your nursing career. Here are some transformative self-care tips. This is the year to put yourself first!

1. Prioritize Mental Health

In the fast-paced healthcare environment, it’s easy to ignore your own mental well-being. Apps like Calm and Headspace offer quick mindfulness exercises you can do between shifts. Pro tip: Take advantage of your lunch break ( yes, you actually get one) for a 5-minute deep-breathing session—it does wonders!

Why it matters: A clear mind improves patient care and reduces burnout.

Try this: Schedule "me-time" in your calendar and treat it like any other appointment.

2. Set Boundaries

Learn to say "NO" without guilt. Say it with your chest and mean it! Taking extra shifts can be tempting, but overloading yourself leads to exhaustion and poor performance.

Action step: Politely (or not, that depends on your mood lol) decline non-urgent requests and communicate your limits to coworkers.

3. Fuel Your Body with Intent

Leave the vending machine snacks and frequent pot lucks behind. Plan meals and snacks that keep your energy steady. Think lean protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats.

Quick fix: Keep a stash of nuts, fruits, and protein bars in your locker.

4. Invest in Quality Footwear

Your feet bear the brunt of long shifts. Invest in ergonomic, durable shoes. Trust us, it’s worth it!

Pro tip: Rotate between pairs to extend their lifespan and keep your feet happy.

5. Leverage Technology for Better Work-Life Balance

Use scheduling apps to manage shifts, meal prep, and even workouts. Apps like NurseGrid can simplify your schedule and keep you organized. Make things easier for yourself!

Bonus: Find online nursing communities for support and camaraderie

6. Don’t Forget to Laugh

Nursing comes with its share of chaotic moments. Embrace humor to lighten your load. Follow social media pages with funny animals or babies, and maybe nursing meme pages. My vote is for the animals!

Why it works: Laughter reduces stress hormones and improves mood.

7. Indulge in Post-Shift Rituals

Create a calming routine to transition from work to home life. Light a candle, take a warm shower, or unwind with your favorite podcast. Find your happy place

8. Bonus* Get a Life

Have a life that isn’t surrounded by nursing! Interact with friends who aren’t nurses, limit the conversations about nursing when you're off from work, skip the mandatory fun (work functions) unless you absolutely have to be there. You see where I’m going with this.
